Iron lofts have been quietly getting stronger for decades. A modern "7-iron" often carries a loft closer to what used to be stamped on a 6-iron, sometimes even a 5-iron, from 20-30 years ago. Manufacturers do this because a stronger-lofted iron flies farther for the same swing — which lets them advertise more distance per club without you actually swinging any faster.
On its own, that's not a problem. The issue shows up at the bottom of the set, where your irons meet your wedges. Wedge lofts haven't moved the same way irons have, mostly because a wedge that's too strong stops being useful for short, controlled shots around the green. The result: a jump in loft — and therefore a jump in distance — right where your set transitions from irons to wedges.

How to check your own set: look at the loft of your last iron (often the pitching wedge that came with your irons) and your next wedge — a gap wedge or sand wedge. Then compare that gap to the loft steps between your other irons. If the gap at the bottom is meaningfully wider than the roughly even 3–4° steps through the rest of your irons, you likely have a real distance gap — a yardage where you don't have a comfortable full-swing club.
The fix is usually straightforward: adding a gap wedge (often called an "AW" or "GW") with a loft that actually splits the difference, rather than assuming your iron set's stock pitching wedge and your sand wedge cover everything between them.
